After the dreadful camping-up that the Joel Schumacher Batmans were, talented director Christopher Nolan re-invents the origin of Batman/Bruce Wayne in highly dramatic and effective fashion, aided considerably by the fine actor Christian Bale, who is properly innocent at first, but then after many years of wandering, returns to Gotham to clean up the corrupt streets and battle multiple threats, from within and without, as a fearless "Dark Knight" determined to strike fear in criminals using his acquired skills.

This Batman doesn't have superpowers or comedic sidekicks, but is a brooding loner who resolves to protect his beloved Gotham no matter the personal or physical cost to himself. Excellent supporting cast has Michael Caine as his loyal and wise butler Alfred, Gary Oldman as police commissioner Gordon, and Liam Neeson, teacher turned nemesis.

A magnificent production transcends even what Tim Burton achieved; demands multiple viewings.
